When you join a cooperative society, you don’t just get benefits—you also accept responsibilities. Let’s understand the rights and duties of every member in simple terms.
Rights of Members
1. Right to Vote – Each member has one vote in the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
2. Right to Participate – Members can attend AGMs, raise issues, and share opinions.
3. Right to Profits – Members share the surplus or dividends as per rules.
4. Right to Information – Members can check records, financial statements, and accounts.
5. Right to Contest Elections – Eligible members can stand for committee or leadership positions.
Duties of Members
- Follow Rules – Obey society by-laws and government laws.
- Financial Responsibility – Pay maintenance charges, loan repayments, or dues on time.
- Active Participation – Attend meetings and contribute in decision-making.
- Respect for Others – Maintain harmony with fellow members
- Avoid Misuse – Don’t misuse society property, funds, or facilities.
Why These Matter
- Rights ensure transparency and equal opportunity.
- Duties maintain discipline, unity, and smooth functioning.
Example In a housing society, if members exercise their right to vote, they can choose a fair management committee. At the same time, paying maintenance regularly (duty) ensures proper upkeep of the building.
Conclusion For a cooperative society to succeed, both rights and duties must go hand in hand. Active, responsible members create a healthy, democratic, and efficient cooperative.
